Which is the Best CNC for You? Avid CNC or Phantom CNC?

1. Thanks for all the info. I've had 5×10 avid for a about 3 years now and I'm seriously considering selling it for a phantom. I have to many issues with chattering and accuracy.

5. Thanks for the info about the machines and helping us make informed decisions! It's still hard for me to compare a cast iron table CNC machine to a build it yourself aluminum frame table CNC, where the prices of the machines are very different as well. Avid's flagship costs as much as Phantom's entry level machine! When it comes to performance though, it is clear that cast iron is the way to go if you can afford it!

10. Great video, you make some good points but the biased should be more clearly acknowledged. You are literally listed as a Phantom CNC employee on the website. also, it should be stated what Parts are made by Phantom and what parts show up in a container from China? where is the frame made? I am not saying China isn't able to produce a good product on occasion but it is a clear downside that a large percentage of my money ends up in China when I purchase a Phantom. 11. I have an Avid and yes it jumps around the shop all day long, sometimes I find it down the street, it just keeps jumping and jumping all over the place

12. Yeah, like twice the cost! Too funny. Comparing a kit to an assembled machine is silly and misses the point of why one would buy a kit over a turnkey solution.

14. How you can consider yourself an "impartial" reviewer since you are listed as a Phantom Dealer on their website? Personally, I think this fact should be disclosed at the START of the video. Otherwise any reasonable person would consider this a conflict of interest.

15. I don’t understand the rollers. What if the machine is moving around on the workpiece and one or both of the rollers run off the edge? I saw a demo of the unit in another video and this happened even without anything on the table. I feel like the rollers add in a whole world of fuck up possibilities.

18. Although some valid points made, I find it interesting that in the short time since this video was made (3 months ago) that the S Series has increased in price by $1,000. I just carted up a “maxed out” 4×8 Avid and the price looks to be about a grand cheaper than shown in this video. That might give pause to some of us planning a similar purchase soon.

22. The movement and rigidity is one reason I went with my ShopSabre. Phantom looks like a great machine as well. About the only thing I wouldn't want are the rollers, I prefer my vacuum table, but otherwise the machines look well made. IMHO, the argument against a PC is unwarranted and misguided. In fact, I'd argue it's an advantage over a tiny screen and proprietary keypad. PCs are hell-a-reliable, especially when purpose built, very convenient to access your NAS for G-code and/or review cad files, etc. Windows update is a non-issue if configured properly.

23. This is a super well put together video! If I would live in the US, I would now know what to to. But I am in Germany so I need to figure it out myself and find some good machines here.
    
    I think my first machine will be something for 8 – 10k, because the work I want to do doesn't really require more at the beginning and when more customers come in who knows. Something like your Phantom looks super sexy! Thank you for sharing this with us.

31. 7:40 – very easy to ad rigidity and mass. Some laser cut sheet metal panels bolted to the base for example. Still a negative point but if ur running the machine like that you can easily make it work better for you.

36. One reason for phantom to be cheaper than shopsabre is that shopsabre uses a Mitsubishi controller, motors and drives. Hsd spindle. While phantum uses an unknown chinese weihong controller, delta drives, motors. Unknown air spindle.

37. Great video Nick, very well done for the newbs looking to jump in. I know u only have these two machines, just curious if you have any experience with shopbot and Shop Sabre. They both seem to have the rigid frames? Also, I wanted an ATC as well as indexing and a vertical clamping for edge work for things like dovetails. ShopBot and ShobSabre both do this…any thoughts?

42. Good video, informative, valid points. However when it comes to weight, whether it's for humans or machines, weight is rarely a good thing. This is usually a sign of poorly engineered, low cost designs. If it was true Ferrari', Porsche' would be built like a tanks. Engineering a light, stiff, reliable, accurate machine costs money…

44. Many Influence rs on youtube talk about all the knowledge building the Avid gives you and helps you understand how to run it. When I buy a car, knowing how it's made will not help me drive it. Phantom has machines that are priced competitive and have all the accessories you could ask for. I'm not a mechanic and don't want to be one. I'll stick to assembled tools.

    My question to you is, can you also do Aluminum cut and if what are the thickness etc.. I looked at the websites and it didn’t say anything about this.
