great video. essential info i needed
TIP..I almost lost a finger using a porter cabil..it twisted out of my hand because of the round hand knobs. They are safer with elongated handles…cut finger to the bone but still have it
Easily the best router advice I've seen on YT
horse power? when is it 1800?
While you recommend the triton router you don’t mention that the guide bushings are proprietary and cost over $100 for a set. What gives?
Very helpful for a noob like me. Thanks
Hi! Thanks for that very useful video. Is it possible to cut a 3/4 inch wide by 3/8 inch deep (three 1/8" passes) with a Bosch palm router? Into melamine. Thanks again.
Richard Chalmers
I am going to purchase a router set with both bases, you recommend the BOSCH 1617EVSPK, I was originally going to go with this but now think I may go with the Bosch MRC23EVSK. I have researched the hell out of this but I am torn. Originally the 1617 was only $179 and the MRC23 was $299, then in a couple of days the 1617 went to $249. For 50 bucks you get LED's, more power and the power switch on the handle. I have a Hitachi M12V in a table, an old Craftsman 1.5HP with switch on the handle (30 years old on 3rd set of bearings), a Dewalt Trim router and a B&D Firestorm FS1200RP plunge (a copy of the dewalt DW621 with through the shaft dust collection). I know this video is 4 years old, but the MRC23 has been out since 2014 and Fine wood working recommends it. What do you think of the MRC23?
some valuble gems there!
I would say you’ve done ur homework thank you
I think I am going to use your link to get the plunge/fixed set router. You mention to use bits with a 1/2 inch shaft but, don't have any links. Any recommendations for quality bits?
That's the first time I heard of "horsepower" in combination with power tools. Here in Germany the power(-consumption) of a tool is measured in Watt(s).
Little routers are usually powerful enough with <1000 Watts, plunger routers should have >1000 Watts, or even >1200 Watts!
Still again a good video of yours! Keep it going! 🙂
Could you use a drill press to make a starting point for a fixed router in the middle of a piece?
Very good information and advice. Thank you for producing a quick, concise, and informative video clearing up the confusion and frustration that often accompanies the "weekend warrior's" various projects. Excellent video!
A very informative video indeed: no flannel, no extraneous self-aggrandisement, no irritating irrelevant background music, just the right pace and, to top it all, I can see from the positions of the levers on the lever caps of your stored metal planes that you have released the pressure on the blades. BTW, I’ve given away all my wooden-bodied moulding planes; I see you have many. The router has made them redundant, but I know they are a pleasure in their own right.
its sad that i cant get that bosch router its perfect and its my favorite brand but its not available in Europe 🙁
When I click on your link for "My favorite router set with BOTH plunge and fixed bases", the Amazon search field indicates that your original search was for "PORTER-CABLE Router, Fixed/Plunge Base Kit", but Amazon (as of 6/4/2022) is ignoring that product and rolling over to a "Bosch 1617EVSPK Wood Router Tool Combo Kit – 2.25 Horsepower Plunge Router & Fixed Base Router Kit with a Variable Speed 12 Amp Motor" instead. Do you recommend that model? Thanks for the informative video.
You know your stuff mate
Good VDO, ??
1 quick question..
Is it a plunge trim router? I mean the Bosch GOF 130.
I'm relatively new to woodworking.
I m interested in setting up a dedicated router table with a lift for doing box joints.
Where do I start with so many brands, prices, and various options?
I want a quality tool without having to go through trial and error.
Have a great day!
possibly the most helpful speaker/teacher on youtube. every sentence has value and I learn so much in such a short period of time. you rock
I have a 50 year old Porter Cable where the bearings finally gave out, especially the small rear bearing. I can't seem to get the case with the brushes off the case body. I don't know what the problem is. Any ideas?
Thank you for this tutorial on routers and for clarifying HP on routers. Never thought about the versatility of 1/2" shaft vs 1/4", another great piece of information.
new to wood working! subbing cause you give great advice. appreciate this material !
Can I mount a drill chuck onto a trim router and use it for a DIY drill press? Thanks James.
Super informative. Thank you.
You answered all my questions, before I even had them. Thanx!!!! Great video!!!
What a combatant background. ?
Sorry.. what's a router?
10/10 – and a straight subscribe from me. Nice one.
Timley, I have been shopping for a router. Do you have a favorite table to go with your favorite router?
Very informative, thank you much.
great video! …2 questions: (1) full confession i searched for one of your videos relevant enough so i could ask is there any way i could swap a 1/2" collet onto one of my three! 1/4" collet routers? ( i have two old base routers and one cordless makita trim router), i've never seen anyone do it or mention it on videos and it probably is either impossible or a huge NO-NO, but i just need someone to tell me not to try this so i can move on with my life
(2) i have no problem buying new tools…actually I do have a problem as I am a little too eager to buy new tools, but re. the bosch kit you provided a link for, can you comment on the above table depth adjustment feature? you didn't mention that feature in your video but it seems like a real nice thing to have , do you know if that comes with the kit or is anything additional needed to purchase to access that feature?
thanks so much…i've learned a ton watching your channel, i hope the hand is back to 100%…peace, Rob D.
I am very new to woodworking and planning to buy a router. Your words are extremely helpful for me. Thank you very much for your time!!!
Before watching this, the answer is no. The router I have is not the right one for me. So I'm watching this to find out which one might be.
This is not the kind of router I was looking for ?
Thank you
Like your commonsense in all your vids thanks
Always the best info from ol' Stumpy
Hey thanks for this informative video, one question thought …
I bought a Makita M3700 Router Trimmer last month, and it says Max 35000 n-1
I think that means it spins at 35000 RPM is that right ?
Problem is that all bits that i see online and on stores in my area are rated 28000 Max and sometimes less than that (24000) !
And my Makita does not have any speed control utility on it
Now should i just use those bits or should i buy another router ? although i hate to lose my investment on the Makita one !
Can i just use 24000 RPM bits and work safely ? or something wrong will happen ? i already tried it couple of times with a 24000 max bits and nothing happened, but i am more concerned about safety on the log run !
Thanks in Advance !
awesome video thanks
Awesome information. Thank you!
I would never recommend it but I bought the Vevor chinese Makita knock off trim router. I fought it until I saw that for $89 I could get the the plunge and offset bits for that price. I have used it on oak, maple, poplar making christmas decorations and it has been very good. I have used it for making signs and it has been very good. I do regret no LED light.. but I have used alt solutions.
